Dennis Sawyer Located near the Virginia border in northeastern North Carolina, Roanoke Rapids is a small city of 18,000 bordering the Roanoke River and minutes away from Lake Gaston, a recreational lake with over 350 miles of shoreline. Accessible in less than a two hours' drive are Richmond, Virginia, Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC (the famous "Research Triangle"), and the beaches of the Outer banks. Roanoke Rapids School District is a small public school system consisting of a pre-school center, two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district's total student population is just over 3,000 students, or about 800 per school. It is one of only a handful of non-consolidated community public school systems remaining in the state. The school district reflects a long history of excellence and progressivism. Among its noteworthy achievements: First public school district in North Carolina to offer twelve grades. First in the state to offer kindergarten to all students. First high school in the state accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Roanoke Rapids High School building, designed by Hobart Upjohn, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Standardized test scores are consistently above state and national averages. State of the art technology is provided in all classrooms, including access to Internet and intranet. Governor's Award of Excellence in Education received for staff development programs. (Staff development opportunities include Paideia workshops, Great Books training, Authentic Assessment and Inquiry-Based Learning, National Humanities Center Project for History workshops, and Technology Integration Process training.) Model mentor program and release time provided for new teachers in their first two years of teaching. District has one of the largest percentages of National Board Certified teachers of any school district in North Carolina. (National Board Certification results in a 12% salary increase.) Officially recognized as one of two Paideia (www.paideia.org) School Districts in the United States.
