West Pender Middle School is a small, rural middle school with a current student body of about 260 students. Our school has made great strides, in spite of what many consider unfavorable demographics, by placing concerted efforts on improving student outcomes through the use of instructional technology. Utilizing a wealth of hardware and software that has proven to improve student achievement in coordination with unique scheduling that gives to each student the opportunity to have extra help as needed, West Pender has become a model in making technology enrichment or remediation a meaningful part of student learning.
West Pender provides numerous opportunities for student involvement beyond the standard academic course work.
All students are able to participate in intramurals, and interscholastic athletic programs for grades 7 and 8 include football, basketball, and baseball for boys and softball, basketball, and volleyball for girls. All students may try out as cheerleaders. Students also may elect to participate in programs such as the Tar Heel Junior Historian League, ROCAME, BETA, or Yearbook. Competitions include the Science Olympiad, Battle of the Books, History Bowl, Geography Bee, and the National Current Events League. Students may choose to participate in band and after-school tutoring. We are very proud of the many opportunities our students have at West Pender Middle School.
